According to the reading the human beings are known for their failure to communicate. This failure to communicate is a big and serious problem because the central concerns in our lives are connected to the concept of communication and how we interact with the society that surrounds us.
We all know that the secret key to communicate in a good and specific way is to have an open communication in order to achieve a good relationship with the person we are talking to.
Also the reading tells us that the communication industry works in instilling negative values to children and teenagers.
These are two of many points that lead us to the desire to study and understand communication, in order to prevent that the future of the society prevails with the values that we care of.
According to the reading, people are used to define terms in a lot of different ways, even though, it is better to evaluate definitions in terms of their utility instead of their concerns.
Many concepts of communication have existed and have changed over the pass of the years, as well as the authors of these important theories concentrate to give the definition a better point of view.
There are concepts as communication as a process, as a symbolical and transactional.
The reading also tells us the different point of views and definitions that Weaver and Hawes had about communications and these are:
Ø W. Weaver, communication is all of the procedures by which one mind can affect another.
Ø Hawes defines communication as a patterned space-time behavior with a symbolic referent.
As a social activity, the act of communicating is pragmatic, we don’t jus seek to communicate but to do specific things in communicating.
Conceptualizing communication, points of reference
Communication is a process: Communication is continuous and complex, also that it cannot be arbitrarily isolated: communications unfolds over time.
It is important to understand that simple interactions are influenced by the past and also have important implications for the future.
Communication is transactional: Sees communication as a process in which there is constant influence between its participants.
Also, emphasizes the importance of the context in the process, as well, participants are influenced by the context in which they interact.
Communication is symbolic: Semioticians see a signs as a consisting of two inextricably linked parts: the signifier and the signified.
A sign is the relationship between these two parts. Symbols are vehicles for the conception of objects. They are developed through shared social experience and exist within a system of other symbols.
Communication requires signs and symbols. These symbols can be verbal or non verbal.
Communication as a social activity: Even though you can communicate with yourself, which is what is use to call intrapersonal communication, communication is a social process that involves both, cognition and emotion. It is a social activity because it serves as a social vehicle that allows interacting with each others.
Communication and intention: Watzlawick, said that you cannot not communicate, suggesting that communication is inherited in all human beings.
Conceptual domains of communication studies: Craig distinguish two types of models:
- Transmission model of communications: Communication is a process of sending and receiving messages or transferring information from one mind to another.
- Constitutive model of communication: Communication itself is the primary, constitutive social process that explains other factors.
Disciplinary domains of communication studies: Communication can be fragmented in sub-disciplines, these vary across the different associations.
Some divisions are defined in:
a) Terms of levels.
b) Terms of a process.
c) Terms of concepts.
Wide differences exist between those who look at the development of speech communication and those who consider it as the discipline that developed from sociology and social psychology.
